Beniamino Gigli sings "A te o cara" (excerpt), from Bellini's "I Puritani", in 1935
"VINCENZO BELLINI - The Musician of Catania - The singer is GIGLI - the world famous tenor"
Shots of sheet music by Vincenzo Bellini. Commentator tells us Bellini died 100 years ago. We hear Gigli singing part of an aria from Bellini's opera 'I Puritani' and see several scenic shots of the sun in the sky, clouds drifting by, trees blowing in the wind and a statue of an angel.
(Note: we do not see Gigli here.)
A te, o cara, amor talora
Mi guidò furtivo e in pianto;
Or mi guida a te d'accanto
Tra la gioia e l'esultar.
Al brillar di sì bell'ora,
Se rammento il mio tormento
Si raddoppia il mio contento,
M'è più caro il palpitar.
To you, oh dear one, love at times
lead me furtively and in tears;
now it guides me to your side
in joy and exhultation.
At the radiance of such a beautiful hour
if I renew my torment,
it redoubles my happiness,
'tis more dear the (heart's) beating.
