Act I - At the Paris Comedie Francaise, the actress Adriana meetw with the stage manager Michonnet who is deeply in love with her, but she confesses to him her love for Maurizio ( actually the Count of Saxe ). Adriana meets Maurizio whom she gives a bouquet of violets. The Prince de Boullon finds a note for Maurizio making a date with him at the Prince's house that night. De Bouillon assumes the not is from Maurizio's mistress, the actress Duclos, but if really from his own wife. The entire cast is invited to the de Bouillon house for a post performance party.
