Donizetti's Don Pasquale is still performed, always to applause and laughs. Pasquale is a classic commedia dell'arte play, and its theme is eternal. The characters are straight out of the plays and puppet shows that were popular in Europe for nearly 400 years: Pasquale (Pantalone), Ernesto (Pierrot), Malatesta, (the conniving notary Scapino) and of course Norina, the clever and scheming Columbina, always managing to escape the clutches of the old man she is being forced to marry, when she really, and naturally, loves a boy of her own age. The presentations can vary from comedy (the norm) to bittersweet heartbreak (not infrequently) to horrific tragedy (rare...I Pagliacci being a notable example). These stock characters have enormous staying power. I remember as a child, back around 1944, seeing my first Punch and Judy show, and I remember to this day the boy lover puppet, guitar in hand, singing "she is very, very beautiful, with all the words sung back and forth on intervals of the second. Absolutely classic, and I remember it nearly 70 years later. Salvatore Baccaloni was a classic Pantalone—Pasquale in this incarnation—and, additionally, one who could sing.
