SETTING: England
PLOT: Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, returned from Ireland, is accused of treason. Both Elizabeth I and Sara, Duchess of Nottingham, love him. Elizabeth and the Duke of Nottingham discover that Essex and Sara love each other. Their jealousy leads to Devereux’s execution, and a distraught Elizabeth collapses.
No. 3 – Duetto: ‘Un tenero core mi rese felice’
Elizabeth tells Essex that she is ready to pardon him. He lets slip that he loves another, and the furious queen vows to destroy Essex and her rival.

Domata in campo la ribelle schiera,

Ecco la colpa, onde al suo duce

D'Elisabetta il cenno!

Il cenno mio
Differì, sconoscente,

Il cenno mio ti lascia
In libertade ancor.
Ma che favelli di palco?
A te giammai rigor di legge
Schiuder non può la tomba.
Quando chiamò la tromba i miei guerrieri
Ad espugnar le torri della superba Cadice,
Temesti che la rovina macchinar potesse
Di te lontano, atroce, invida rabbia:
accennando una gemma che Roberto ha in dito
