The aria which concludes Act I of Christoph Wilibald von Gluck's 1762 opera Orfeo ed Euridice. This is the scene where Orfeo sets off optimistically to rescue his Euridice from Hades. The role was originally sung by the great castrato Gaetano Guadagni who was also a favorite of Handel, having sung the role of Didymus in Theodora a dozen years earlier.
Addio, addio, o miei sospiri,
Han speme i miei desiri;
Per lei soffrir vo' tutto,
Ed ogni duolo sfidar.
Veder ben vogl'io l'inferno,
I figli d'Orco vincer,
Quei tutti superar!
Goodbye, goodbye, or my sighs,
Han desires my desires;
I will suffer everything for you,
And every duel challenge.
See the hell very well,
The sons of Orco vincer,
Those all surpass!
