The great child singing star in an operatic aria for which she is suited, in terms of looks and voice quality, even if she is only 16 here. One needs to remember that Adelina Patti was only 16 when she did her first Lucia. There are certain roles, such as Lucia, Juliette, and Cho-Cho-San, which vocally and musically gifted children can sing, if only they were given the chance. The problem is that giant opera houses, large orchestras, and the triumph and predominance of verismo, mean that audiences have become used to (dare I say hardened to) huge middle-aged women playing 15-year olds on stage. It's something like the eternal problem of conductors doing Wagner who are unable to think beyond the orchestra. They think they are doing symphonies instead of operas and the result is that nobody can hear the singers, unless, yet again, we have huge people blasting away full tilt, just trying to be heard. But don't get me started............
