ROMÉO ET JULIETTE
Opéra en 5 actes
Composer: Charles Gounod (1818–1893)
Libretto: Jules Barbier & Michael Carré, after Shakespeare
First performed: Théâtre Lyrique, Paris, 27 April 1867
SETTING: Verona, 16th century
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove.
No. 3 – Ariette: 'Ah! Je veux vivre dans le rêve...'
Juliet is engaged to marry Count Paris, the nephew of the Prince of Verona, but wants to enjoy life a little first.
Juliette Capulet (soprano): Catherine Malfitano
Conductor: Michel Plasson
