O ma lyre immortelle

Shirley Verrett was top American operatic mezzo soprano who later took on soprano roles later in her career. Her mezzo roles included “The Rape of Lucretia”, “Carmen”, “Samson and Dalila” and “Un ballo in maschera”. After she transitioned to soprano parts, she had roles in in “L'Africaine”, “ Bluebeard's Castle”, “ Macbeth”, “Dialogues of the Carmelites”, “ Tosca”, “Norma”, Aida”, “Otello”, “Fidelio” and “ Alceste”. In 1994, she made a more mainstream Broadway debut in the Tony Award winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Rodgers and Hammerstein. She spoke frankly about the racism she encountered as a black person in the American classical music world in her memoir.
