Shirley Verrett was top American operatic mezzo soprano who later took on soprano roles later in her career. Her mezzo roles included “The Rape of Lucretiaâ€, “Carmenâ€, “Samson and Dalila†and “Un ballo in mascheraâ€. After she transitioned to soprano parts, she had roles in in “L'Africaineâ€, “ Bluebeard's Castleâ€, “ Macbethâ€, “Dialogues of the Carmelitesâ€, “ Toscaâ€, “Normaâ€, Aidaâ€, “Otelloâ€, “Fidelio†and “ Alcesteâ€. In 1994, she made a more mainstream Broadway debut in the Tony Award winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Rodgers and Hammerstein. She spoke frankly about the racism she encountered as a black person in the American classical music world in her memoir. This is Verrett’s stunning interpretation of “O ma lyre immortelle†from the Charles Gounod Opera “Saphoâ€. Enjoy! Thanks For Your Comments.
