Aris Christofellis, Sopranist. Scherza, Infida,
from Ariodante, Covent Garden Theatre, London, 1735
George Frideric Handel
George Frideric Handel: Scherza, Infida, from Ariodante.
Aris Christofellis, sopranist.
Polinesso lies to Ariodante by telling him that Ginevra loves him rather than Ariodante. For "proof," Polinesso disguises another woman in Ginevra's clothes and lets Ariodante see the false "Ginevra" accepting Polinesso into her home. Ariodante is distraught and thinks of suicide. Friend Lurcanio intercedes and counsels revenge instead. Ariodante bemoans his fate.
Scherza, infida, in grembo al drudo,
Io tradito, a morte in braccio,
Per tua colpa ora men vo. /
Ma a spezzar lindegno laccio,
Ombra mesta e spirto ignudo,
Per pena io tornero. (da capo)
Enjoy yourself, o faithless one,
In the arms of your lover. Betrayed by you
I will now give myself up to death's embrace. /
But in order to break this shameful tie,
A sad shade and bereaved spirit,
I will return to punish you. (da capo)
