Helen Charlston, Al Lampo dell'Armi from Handel's Giulio Cesare HWV 17

Singer: Francesca Cuzzoni

Helen Charlston sings this rousing aria from Handel's Giulio Cesare live in the 2018 Final of the international Handel Singing Competition, which she went on to win. This was recorded live as part of the 2018 London Handel Festival at St George's, church in Hanover Square, where Handel worshipped.

Al lampo dell'armi
quest'alma guerriera
vendetta farà.
Non fia che disarmi
la destra guerriera
chi forza le dà

With shining weapons
this warlike spirit
wil have revenge.
And may no-one disarm
the warrior's arm
that gives it force

Laurence Cummings - musical director
London Handel Orchestra

The first performance of Giulio Cesare took place at the King's Theatre on 20 February 1724 with Caesar and Cleopatra respectively performed by the castrato Senesino and soprano Francesca Cuzzoni. The opera proved a popular success, with members of the audience recording that 'Cenesino & Cozzuna (sic) shine beyond all criticism.' Meanwhile, the singers' partisans squabbled, providing 'the public with the most diverting scenes'. Caesar's magnificent Act II aria 'Al lampo dell'armi' responds to Cleopatra, imploring him to flee the approaching enemies who want Caesar dead. Instead, with heroic defiance, Caesar resolves to fight the hostile forces.
