Cara speme, questo core from Giulio Cesare in Egitto (HWV 17)
by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson
Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan
Premiere: King’s Theatre, London, 1724
The role of Sesto was originally sung by Margherita Durastanti (active 1700–1734).
Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym (1678-1729)
Cara speme, questo core
tu cominci a lusingar.
Par che il ciel presti favore
i miei torti a vendicar.
Dear Hope, You start
To please this Heart.
Heaven seems to
Favour my Revenge.
- TRANSLATION by Martin Friedman
from the liner notes by Andrew Porter:
"Cara speme," one of Handel's moving bass-line-and-voice dialogues, was added to the score as an afterthought (the text appears as an appendix on the last page of the 1724 libretto). The composer may well have felt that he had otherwise held Durastanti too constantly in vengeful vein.
