Youngok Shin has appeared regularly at the Metropolitan Opera since 1991 in a variety of roles including Gilda in Rigoletto, title role in Lucia di Lammermoor, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Elvira in I Puritani, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Adina in L'Elisir d’Amore, the Nightingale in L'Enfant et les sortilèges, among others. She has also sung in the Met’s New Year's Eve Millennium Gala, the 2001 Gala honoring Giuseppe Verdi and the World Trade Center Relief Benefit. At the Met she has sung with some of the worlds leading conductors and singers including James Levine, James Conlon, Nello Santi, Edoardo Müller, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci, Samuel Ramey, Marilyn Horne, among others.
She has also appeared at the Royal Opera Covent Garden as Gilda, the Opéra National de Paris as La Reine in Perelà l'homme de fumée, Oscar in Ballo and as Gilda, Opéra de Nice as Aminta in Il Re Pastore and as Elvira in Puritani, Opéra Comique as Amina in La Sonnambula, and as Adina, Canadian Opera Company as Gilda and Lucia, Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile and the Liceo in Barcelona as Léïla in Les Pêcheurs de perles, Teatro Regio in Turin as Elvira, Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania in the title role of Bianca e Fernando, Washington National Opera as Oscar, New York City Opera as the Princess in L'Enfant et les sortilèges, Baltimore Opera Company as Lakmé, Lucia, and Gilda, New Jersey State Opera and Florentine Opera as Lucia, the Spoleto Festivals in Charleston and in Italy as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, the Monterrey Mexico Music Festival as Adina, Tenerife festival as Giulietta in I Capuletti e i Montecchi, and in several other world famous venues and festivals in brilliant leading roles.
On the concert stage Ms Shin has appeared at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, with the Cincinnati May Festival singing Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol, the Minnesota Orchestra for the Mahler 8th under James Conlon, the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a gala concert under Esa Pekka Salonen, concerts in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul with José Carreras, Carmina Burana with the New Jersey Symphony, an aria concert with the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, Handel’s Samson with the Pittsburgh Oratorio Society, and in recital in Toronto at Roy Thomson Hall and Pittsburgh Recital Series. She has also toured South Korea in a series of televised recitals and concerts sponsored by Samsung Electronics and the Korean Broadcasting System.
A native of Seoul, she is the recipient of a number of prizes in vocal competitions; winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions of 1990, the Loren Zachary Competition, and First Prizes in the Olga Koussevitsky Competition. She holds B.M. and M.M. Degrees from the Juilliard School of Music.

이시대의 가장 아름다운 리릭 콜로라투라 소프라노로 꼽히는 신영옥은 메트로폴리탄 오페라의 ≪리골레토≫에서 질다로 데뷔한 이래 ≪람메르무어의 루치아≫의 타이틀 롤, ≪청교도≫의 엘비라, ≪돈 죠반니≫의 체를리나, 테너 루치아노 파바로티와 함께 했던 ≪사랑의 묘약≫의 아디나, ≪가면 무도회≫의 오스카 역 등의 주역을 맡으며 눈부신 활약을 하고 있다. 이외에도 메트 오페라가 매해 여름 뉴욕 시(市) 공원에서 개최하는 야외 음악회에 정기적으로 참여 하였으며, 1천 년 만에 한 번밖에 열 수 없는 밀레니엄 갈라에서는 스페셜 게스트로, 베르디 서거 100주년을 기념하는 시즌 오프닝 나이트와 세계무역센터 참사 피해자 가족을 돕기 위한 자선 갈라에서는 지휘자 제임스 레바인, 테너 플라시도 도밍고, 소프라노 데보라 보이트 등과 함께 열연하며 평론가들의 극찬을 받았다. 또한 영국의 로얄 오페라 하우스 코벤트 가든, 프랑스의 바스티유 오페라, 오페라 코믹, 니스 오페라, 독일의 콜론 오페라, 스페인의 리시우 극장, 이태리의 테아트로 레지오, 테아트로 마씨모 벨리니, 캐나다의 캐나디언 오페라 컴퍼니, 미국의 워싱턴 오페라, 볼티모어 오페라 컴퍼니 등에서의 데뷔 무대를 성공적으로 이끌어냈고, 이에 ‘타임즈’, ‘르 몽드’를 비롯한 주요 언론들이 모두 문화 면에서 그녀를 소개하며 ‘새털 같은 은빛의 목소리’라는 호평을 아끼지 않았다.
최고의 프리마돈나로서뿐만 아니라 콘서트와 리사이틀, 페스티벌 무대에서도 격찬을 받으며 활발한 활동을 해온 신영옥은 링컨 센터의 모스틀리 모차르트 페스티벌에서 ‘모차르트 콘서트 아리아’ 연주회를 가졌고, 테너 호세 카레라스와는 싱가포르·쿠알라룸푸르 갈라 콘서트와 서울 상암 경기장 빅 콘서트에서 함께 호흡을 맞추었다. 오케스트라 신포니카 시실리아나와는 팔레르모, 메시나 및 카타니아에서 아리아 연주회, 덴마크에서는 아르후스 페스티벌 심포니와 함께 ≪청교도≫ 콘서트를 가졌으며, 신시네티에서는 지휘자 제임스 콘론과 함께 하이든의 '로드 넬슨 미사'와 스트라빈스키의 '나이팅게일'을 연주해 화제가 되기도 하였다. 뉴욕 카네기 홀, 엘리스 툴리 홀, 토론토 로이 톰슨 홀에서의 리사이틀 등을 통해 섬세한 음악성을 보여주었고, LA 필하모닉의 시즌 개막공연에서는 에사 페카 살로넨의 지휘 아래 모차르트의 ‘엑슐라테 유빌라테’를 연주한 바 있다.
어느덧 메트 무대에 데뷔한 지 16년째로 접어든 신영옥, 그녀는 지난 해 말과 올해 초에도 메트 무대에서 루치아와 질다로 분해 자신의 이름만으로 메트로폴리탄의 객석을 가득 메웠다. 그녀의 2007년은 또다시 익숙한 도전들로 채워질 예정이다. 미네소타 오페라에서 극장초연으로 무대에 올려지는 ≪라크메≫에 출연하며, 볼티모어 오페라 컴퍼니에서는 ≪로미오와 줄리엣≫, 그 외에도 메트 오페라와 미국, 유럽 등지에서의 화려한 무대가 계획되어 있다.
