Karl Richter's post-romantic take on Baroque opera - that is, without the use of countertenors and travesto sopranos, replacing with basses and tenors.
Giulio Cesare has beautiful arias and superb orchestration. The Münchener Bach-Orchester's continuo playing is masterful, but I won't be uploading the recitatives.
Cornelia and Sesto have also come to the palace - and Sesto challenges Tolomeo to a duel. He, however, orders his servants to lock Sesto in prison. Achilla (Ernst Gerold Schramm) promises Cornelia that, if she marries him, Sesto will have freedom.
"Tu sei il cor di questo core,
Sei il mio ben, non t'adirar!
Per amor io chiedo amore,
Più da te non vuò bramar."
Aria Achilla
Cornelia
Dove, dove, inumani,
l'anima mia guidate? Empi, lasciate,
che al mio core, al mio bene
io porga almen gli ultimi baci. Ahi pene!
Achilla air
You are the heart of this core, you are mine well, do not be angry! For love I ask for love, more than I do not want to crave. (part)
Sesto Mother Recitative !
Cornelia
My life!
Sesto
Goodbye!
(while the guards want to take Sesto away, Cornelia runs to consider him by the arm)
Cornelia
Where, where, inhuman,
do you lead my soul? Empi, left,
that to my heart, to my good
I give almen the last kisses. Ahi penis!
