THE MUSIC: Mozart wrote the opera Apollo et Hyacinthus (K.38) when he was 11 years old. This is Hyacinthus's first aria "Saepe terrent Numina" sung here in a German version by the legendary dramatic coloratura Edda Moser. It's a very long aria in full, so I've only included the final section, starting with a cadenza to a High D that leads into the da capo repeat with a sustained High F.

HYACINTHUS
Sæpe terrent Numina,
Surgunt, et minantur,
Fingunt bella, quæ nos angunt,
Mittunt tela, quæ non tangunt,
At post ficta nubila
Rident et iocantur.
Et amore
Et tremore
Gentes stringunt subditas:
Nunc amando,
Nunc minando,
Salva stat auctoritas.
