An underrated artist, the East German baritone Günther Leib sang with immaculate placement, discernment and ease. His was a light and mobile voice used with unfailing charm. He was a superb interpreter of Bach's music, for which his strengths were ideally suited. Perhaps his best opera role was Beckmesser, of which sadly no commercial recording exists. Also noteworthy is a recording of the St. Matthew Passion under Mauersberger where Leib's singing of the bass arias ranks with the best.
