Kenneth Tarver in the role of Don Ottavio at Bergen National Opera's production of Don Giovanni (2015).
Based on the classic Don Juan story of seduction, class division and the philandering Don´s eventual descent in hell, Mozart - as only he can - cloaks both misdeeds and moments of touching caress in ravishing music.
Oliver Mears´ new production for BNO sets the story amongst the labyrinthine corridors and salons of a grand ship, with its upper and lower decks and their implicit privileges and deprivations. As Mozart´s music weaves its magic, characters slip into corners, collide in passages, deceive and declaim. We breathe the humid cabin-fever of lives at sea - in many senses. Loyalty is exploited, love rebounds.
Presented by Bergen National Opera, in cooperation with Edvard Grieg choir and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Rinaldo Alessandrini

English Libretto or Translation:
On her, my treasure, all joy dependeth, Life hath no pleasure, but that she sendeth, Sorrows that grieve her, torture my heart, E'en when she sigheth, my sighs awaken, And joy it dieth, by her forsaken; Oh, worst of torments, from her to part!
