Victor Maurel was one of the greatest french baritones of the latter half of the 19th century. Born in Marseille in 1848 he first sang in America in Aida in 1873 and then returned a score of years later to sing Don Giovanni and two of his three major creations, that of Iago in Otello and the title role of Falstaff. Leoncavallo also wrote Tonio in Pagliacci for him. Victor Maurel sang until 1906 and then taught, painted and designed for the Metropolitan.

Lasciati almen veder, mio bell'amore!
English Libretto or Translation:
From out thy casement glancing, oh, smile upon me, With sighs of hapless love I sing this ditty. Thy bosom I would move, thou hast undone me, Oh, grant the pray'r of love, and shew some pity!
Than roses art thou fairer, than honey sweeter, Balmier 'tis when thou sighest than western breezes, Oh, come, my fair, descend, I entreat thee! Death shall my torments end, if death thee pleases.
