Photo by Monika Rittershaus (detail). Don Ottavio's aria. La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ludovic Morlot. Recorded live in December 2014 at La Monnaie, Brussels. Dear COPYRIGHT HOLDER, if you have any problems with this being on YouTube, please contact me, and I will remove it immediately. Thank you!
* Mr Lehtipuu's rather unusual interpretation of this aria is probably due to the stage director's Krzysztof Warlikowski's reading who obviously wanted Don Ottavio to be rather strong, sarcastic and disillusioned, and to sing this aria directly to Donna Anna in a not-so-gentle, even furious manner while she is lying sparsely clad on a table. In my opinion, Mr Lehtipuu ventures to do a balancing act between his stage directions and that which Mozart/ da Ponte wrote.
Il mio tesoro intanto
Meantime go and
andate a consolar,
console my dearest one,
E del bel ciglio il pianto
and seek to dry the tears
cercate di asciugar.
from her lovely eyes.
Ditele che i suoi torti
Tell her that I have gone
a vendicar io vado;
to avenge her wrongs,
Che sol di stragi e morti
and will return only as the messenger
nunzio vogl'io tornar.
of punishment and death.
