(1888-1968)
Italian born baritone. One of the most famous Falstff's singing the role for Toscanini at La Scala in 1922 and as late as 1961. Other famous parts included Don Goivanni, Figaro, Iago, Scarpia and Malatesta. Enormously popular at Covent Garden (1926-31), Salzburg (1935-39) and at Glyndebourne (1936-39). He returned to London after the war, singing at the Cambridge and the Stoll (1946-48)
