Joseph Schwarz was one of ten children of Jewish parents and grew up in poverty . He learned the tailor's trade . After his voice was discovered , he was allowed to study in Brno thanks to rich patrons with Adolf Robinson.
He made his debut in 1900 in Linz , toured it with great success in Europe and returned to his home town of Riga. After a guest performance at the Vienna Volksoper , he became in 1909 a permanent member of the Vienna Court Opera , where he also celebrated as a partner of Enrico Caruso phenomenal success . After a stint in Berlin , he moved in 1915 to the local opera. In 1921 he also appeared in the United States of America. Joseph Schwarz was not only for his beautiful voice , but also for his outstanding acting talent became a favorite of the audience.
On the basis of alcohol problems worsened in 1925 his voice . Joseph Schwarz died in 1926 in Berlin from a kidney ailment. His mausoleum with the words " Lord, you are my dwelling place in all " is located in the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee in Berlin.
