For the past 37 years, the annual Richard Tucker Award has been granted to an American singer poised on the edge of a major national and international career, with a list of winners that reads like a who’s who of international opera stars.
This year’s recipient, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, has been described by The Guardian as “a great artist, no question, with an imperturbable steadiness of tone, and a nobility of utterance that invites comparison not so much with her contemporaries as with mid-20th century greats such as Kirsten Flagstad.” Some of her 15-16 highlights include debuts with the Seattle Opera and Royal Opera House (Nabucco); LA Opera (Norma), and Washington National Opera (Götterdämmerung). In a preview to the November 1 Richard Tucker Gala, WQXR presents an exclusive performance and conversation with Ms. Barton.

Ho il cor gonfio di lagrime. Quel lume!Ah! una Madonna!
Stella del marinar! Vergine Santa, tu mi difendi in quest'ora suprema, tu vedi quanta passione e quanta fede mi trasse a tale audacia estrema! Sotto il tuo velo che i prostrati ammanta ricovera costei che prega, e trema. Scenda per questa fervida orazione sul capo mio, Madonna del perdono, una benedizion... O Vergin, su me scenda la tua benedizion.
