Francesco Merli, Tenor (1887-1976)
Giacomo Puccini - Manon Lescaut
Tu, tu, amore, tu?
with Maria Zamboni, Soprano (1895-1976)
My personal opinion: You´ll find here on YouTube also Merli in Otello extracts. With these and the great duet from "Manon Lescaut" we hear a bright spinto voice, which was ignored by the grammophone, because Aureliano Pertile was a favorite of Toscanini. So Merli, whose voice was much more attractive, stood a little bit in the shadow. I quite believe, his voice was a mixture of Corellis sound and Bjoerlings qualities. This Puccini duet seems to be the pattern of the recording Bjoerling and Albanese made in 1954. What do you think about Merli?
