|Giacomo Antonio Puccini|
|Previous scene:||Cosi comanda Turandot|
|Next scene:||Tu che guardi le stelle|
September 9, 2005 - Universal Amphitheatre - Los Angeles
Aretha sings the aria Nessun Dorma, from Puccini's opera Turandot, a favorite of opera legend Luciano Pavarotti (who sang it to close the 2006 Winter Olympics). The twist of soul she puts into this classic brings it to a whole new place that I think would have even thrilled Puccini.
I believe she first performed it when Pavarotti was unable to appear and Aretha stood in for him and sung it on short notice, live during an awards show in his place.
Sorry about he crummy quality, but hey, this was digital in 2005.
And no, I do not have any more video of the concert--this was it.
Nessun dorma, Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o Principessa,
nella tua fredda stanza,
guardi le stelle
che tremano d'amore e di speranza.
Ma il mio mistero e chiuso in me,
il nome mio nessun sapra!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo diro'
quando la luce splendera'!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
che ti fa mia!
(Il nome suo nessun saprà !
e noi dovrem, ahime, morir!)
Dilegua, o notte!
No one sleeps! No one sleeps!
You too, O Princess!
in your chaste room
are watching the stars which
tremble with love and hope!
But my secret lies hidden within me,
no one shall discover my name!
Oh no, I will reveal it only on your lips,
when daylight shines forth
and my kiss shall break
the silence which makes you mine
(no one shall discover my name!
And we will have to die!)
Depart, oh night!
Fade away, you stars!
At dawn I shall win!
