Paris Live 1997
Marschallin: Renée Fleming
Octavian: Susan Graham
Conductor: Edo de Waart
This is one of my favourite scenes in all opera. Fleming and Graham are in their prime and are ideal exponents of their roles - the next year they recorded the scene with breathtakingly luminous results on the disc "Strauss Heroines". Here live, we get incredibly beautiful music making from all, so many touching moments and a wonderful sense of collaboration between the artists. In my opinion, though very fine, this is not Fleming's very best "Da geht er hin", but as soon as Octavian enters "Ach, du bist wieder da" the scene catches fire and we are privy to thrilling theatre. It's less refined but more passionate than the studio recording - I'm very pleased to have both. The Bastille has a famously terrible acoustic, so Fleming has said that she always "sang out" when she was performing there.
