Elisabeth Grummer, german soprano, 1911-1986. One of the most important musicians of the 50s and 60s.
A warm, tender and radiant approach to singing. She always served precise musicality, simplicity of expression and clarity of articulation. The timbro of this even voice has instrumental qualities, reminding sounds of strings. E. Grummer transmits emotion without dramatic exaggeration and she constantly revised her technique.
Wise choice of repertory. Mostly W.A. Mozart, R. Strauss, R. Wagner (lyric parts), C. M. von Weber, some French operas .
Some journalists report that her influential rival Elisabeth Schwarzkopf did not permit much space for her in the Pantheon of star singers. According to my experience, reality always proves to be more complicated.
Elisabeth Grummer always lived in music, not because nor for this art.
Enjoy her singing the nostalgic aria Connais tu le pays.. in German. Kennst du das Land.. A trip in the memory. It comes from the almost forgotten opera (not really a pity) Mignon , act I, by the French composer Ambroise Thomas (1881-1896).
