Sherrill Milnes, Baritone (born 1935)
Giuseppe Verdi - Attila
E´gettata la mia sorte
(Recorded 1972)
My personal opinion: "Do you have any good reasons why you didn´t choose Sherrill Milnes for part I?" I was asked. The answer is easy: No, I don´t have any good reasons, because for me he was a very good baritone: Powerful, masculine, virile and blessed with big versatility. But in the singing of Leonard Warren and Robert Merrill I found something I missed with Milnes: Style.
Milnes voice was an attractive, high dramatic baritone and furthermore, he had a commanding and stately stage presence (By the way: I remember a german TV-Show in the late 70s and when he came on stage, my father said to me: Oh, he walks like John Wayne) After his Met-debut 1965 he became in the 1970s a prominent Verdi-Baritone. His partnership with Domingo (both on stage and recording-studio) is legendary. Milnes musicality is comprehensive: Playing piano and violin, viola and tuba he was even a conductor (and there´s a famous recording with Domingo where they conduct each other!). No, I don´t want to say, he reminds me of John Wayne, but indeed there was a little cowboy-manner he brought to opera-stage. Milnes was "here, there and everywhere at the international opera-front" the New York Times once wrote. He came up with the NY City Opera in the mid 1960s, singing Valentin with Caballé´s first Marguerite. He made sensation in "Luisa Miller" ("A new star was born") and old conductor Karl Böhm choosed him for MacBeth in Vienna (later he gave him Don Giovanni). After Robert Merrills retirement, Milnes became the leading Met-Baritone, without rivalry. Very remarkable was Milnes ability to sing high notes, he could reached the B. Some reviewer once pondered, wether Milnes was really a tenor in disguise. For me, Sherrill Milnes remaines a very good baritone, no more, no less and a great supportive of the Met. Milnes, I believe, was an "All american hero". With five votings you gave him place position 36 in our scale - together with Maria Cebotari.
