PARTE PRIMA
Il Chiostro del Convento di San Giusto.
A destra una cappella illuminata. Vi si vede attraverso ad un cancello dorato la tomba di Carlo V. A sinistra, porta che mena all'esterno. In fondo la porta interna del Chiostro. Giardino con alti cipressi. È l'alba.
SCENA PRIMA
Coro di Frati, un Frate, poi Don Carlo. Il Coro salmeggia dalla cappella. Sulla scena un Frate, prostrato innanzi alla tomba, prega sottovoce.
CORO
Carlo il sommo imperatore
Non è più che muta polve:
Del celeste suo fattore
L'alma altera or trema al piè.
IL FRATE
Ei voleva regnare sul mondo
Obblïando Colui che nel ciel
Segna agli astri il cammino fedel.
L'orgoglio immenso fu, fu l'error suo profondo.
CORO
Carlo il sommo imperatore
Non è più che muta polve:
Del celeste suo fattore
L'alma altera or trema al piè.
Signore, il tuo furor non piombi sul suo cor. Pietà! Signor...
IL FRATE

Il giorno spunta lentamente. Don Carlo pallido ed esterrefatto erra sotto le vòlte del chiostro. Si arresta per ascoltare, e si scopre il capo. S'ode suonar una campana. Il Coro dei Frati esce dalla cappella, traversa la scena e si perde nei corridoi del chiostro.

ACT ONE
PART ONE
The Cloister of the Convent of San Giusto.
On the right an illuminated chapel. You can see the tomb of Charles V through a gilded gate. On the left, door that leads outside. At the bottom of the inner door of the Cloister. Garden with tall cypress trees. It's dawn.
FIRST SCENE
Chorus of Friars, a Friar, then Don Carlo. The choir salutes from the chapel. On the scene, a friar, prostrated before the grave, prays in a low voice.
CHOIR
Charles the Supreme Emperor
It is no more than mute dust:
Of the heavenly his factor
The alma alters or trembles at the footer.
THE FRIAR

The day comes up slowly. Don Carlo, pale and amazed, wandered under the vault of the cloister. It stops to listen, and the head is discovered. A bell is ringing. The Coro dei Frati leaves the chapel, crosses the scene and gets lost in the corridors of the cloister.
