Giuseppe Verdi's second comic opera (described as a commedia lirica) and his last (of 28), Falstaff is based on the Shakespearian character - the fat knight who makes his living exploring others.
It wasn't very sucessful, until Arturo Toscanini returned it to the regular operatic repertory.
Here, it is conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as... well, Falstaff.
QUICKLY
inchinandosi e interrompendo Falstaff
Reverenza. La bella Alice …
FALSTAFF
alzandosi e scattando
Al diavolo te con Alice bella!
Ne ho piene le bisacce!
Ne ho piene le budella!
QUICKLY
Voi siete errato …
FALSTAFF
Un canchero! Sento ancor le cornate
Di quell'irco geloso!
Ho ancor l'ossa arrembate
D'esser rimasto curvo,
come una buona lama
Di Bilbao, nello spazio
D'un panierin di dama!
Con quel tufo! E quel caldo!
Un uom della mia tempra,
Che in uno stillicidio
continuo si distempra!
Poi, quando fui ben cotto,
rovente, incandescente,
M'han tuffato nell'acqua. Canaglie!!!
Alice, Meg, Nannetta, Mr Ford, Dr.Cajus, Fenton sbucano dietro una casa, or l'uno or l'altro spiando, non visti da Falstaff e poi si nascondono, poi tornano a spiare
QUICKLY
Essa è innocente.
Prendete abbaglio.
FALSTAFF
Vattene!
QUICKLY
infervorata
La colpa è di quei fanti
Malaugurati! Alice piange, urla, invoca i santi.
Povera donna! V'ama. Leggete.
QUICKLY
bowing and interrupting Falstaff
Reverence. The beautiful Alice ...
FALSTAFF
getting up and shooting
To hell with you beautiful Alice!
I've got my saddlebags full!
I've got my guts full!
QUICKLY
You are wrong ...
FALSTAFF
A canker! I still feel the horns
Of that jealous iris!
I still have the arboreal bones
of being curved,
like a good blade
of Bilbao, in the space
D'un panierin di dama!
With that tuff! And that heat!
A man of my temper,
Which in a
continuous dripping is distempered!
Then, when I was well cooked,
hot, incandescent,
I plunged into the water. Scoundrels !!!
Alice, Meg, Nannetta, Mr. Ford, Dr.Cajus, Fenton come out behind a house, either spying or not, not seen by Falstaff and then they hide, then they go back to spying
QUICKLY.
She's innocent.
Take it blind.
FALSTAFF
Get out!
QUICKLY
fervent
The blame lies with those
unfortunate infantrymen ! Alice cries, screams, invokes the saints.
Poor woman! He loves you. Read.
