'The Two Foscari': Francesco Foscari was the longest reigning Doge of Venedig (43 years). In 1445, Foscari's only surviving son, Jacopo, was tried by the Council of Ten on charges of bribery and corruption and exiled from the city. Two further trials, in 1450 and 1456, led to Jacopo's imprisonment on Crete and his eventual death there.
News of Jacopo's death caused Foscari to withdraw from his government duties, and in October 1457 the Council of Ten forced him to resign. However, his death a week later provoked such public outcry that he was given a state funeral.

'I due Foscari': The Byron play 'The Two Foscari' (1821) served as the basis for the libretto written by Francesco Maria Piave for Giuseppe Verdi's opera, which premiered on 3 November 1844 in Rome.

Act 3. The Piazza of San Marco

A galley will take Jacopo away to exile. He is led out of the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), followed by his wife, Lucrezia. Together, in a huge choral number, Jacopo, Lucrezia and the people of Venice express their feelings. Jacopo: "O padre, figli, sposa" / "Father, children, wife, I bid you a last farewell", and the scene ends with Jacopo escorted onto the galley while Lucrezia faints...

tu ispira la virtù.

LUCREZIA:

This opera also showcases a star of a different kind: the legendary city of VENICE.

CARLO NAYA (1816, Tronzano Vercellese - 1882, Venice) was an Italian photographer known for his pictures of Venice including its works of art.
An inheritance allowed him to travel to major cities in Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. He was advertising his services as portrait photographer in Istanbul in 1845, and opened his studio in Venice in 1857. He sold his work through photographer and optician Carlo Ponti.
Following Naya's death in 1882, his studio was run by his wife, then by her second husband. In 1918 it was closed.

VENEZIA AL CHIARO DI LUNA / VENICE BY NIGHT. These images were actually taken by day (a "sunlight" version of it exists) then printed with a thick blue hue to create the "night effect", then retouched with gouache colours...

Another great interpretation - Marko Lampas - can be found here: His use of rubato is sometimes very "19th century" but always absolutely compelling and never merely mannered.
I particularly like that Lampas keeps a little the high notes (keywords): innocente__ , perdo__no, fi__gli, dolo__ re...
I CANNOT RESIST those looooong fermatas, perfectly idiomatic in this belcanto repertoire.
