Alfredo goes out. Violetta enters with some papers in her hand, talking to Annina. Behind them is Giuseppe.

VIOLETTA
Where's Alfredo?

ANNINA
He's just gone to Paris.

VIOLETTA
When's he coming back?

ANNINA
Before it gets dark …
He told me to tell you.

VIOLETTA
It's strange!

ANNINA
presenting her with a letter
This is for you.

VIOLETTA
taking the letter
Very well. In a little while
A man will be coming on business.
Show him in at once.

Annina and Giuseppe go out. Violetta opens the letter.

VIOLETTA
alone, reading
Aha! So Flora's discovered my hiding?place;
She invites me to a dance this evening!
She'll wait for me in vain.

She throws the letter on to the table and sits down.

ANNINA
There's a gentleman here.

VIOLETTA
It'll be the man I'm expecting.
