Highlights from the 1953 recording of La Traviata performed by Maria Callas, Francesco Albanese and Ugo Savarese with the Symphony Orchestra of Radiotelevisione Italiana, Turin conducted by Gabriele Santini. (World Record Club recording catalogue No. OHP 118)
This recording has been transferred from a vinyl long play record which was originally purchased by my father in the 1950s. This is an early example of a long playing 33rpm record which was recorded before the standard RIAA equalisation curve was adopted throughout the industry so when played using a standard cartridge and phono amplifier it sounds rather like a 78.
This recording has been digitally restored using a Thorens TD280 Mk II turntable with a Cambridge 540 P pre-amplifier, Xonar D2 sound card, Audacity editing software, specialist click removal and de-noise software and equalisation.
VIOLETTA
Violetta sola
È strano! è strano! in core
Scolpiti ho quegli accenti!
Sarìa per me sventura un serio amore?
Che risolvi, o turbata anima mia?
Null'uomo ancora t'accendeva O gioia
Ch'io non conobbi, essere amata amando!
E sdegnarla poss'io
Per l'aride follie del viver mio?
VIOLETTA
alone
How strange it is … how strange!
Those words are carved upon my heart!
Would a true love bring me misfortune?
What do you think, o my troubled spirit?
No man before kindled a flame like this.
Oh, joy …
I never knew …
To love and to be loved!
Can I disdain this
For a life of sterile pleasure?
