Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007) sings "De' miei bollenti spiriti" followed by the cabaletta, "O mio rimorso, o infamia!" from the 2nd Act of Verdi's La Traviata. This was recorded during the tenor's September 23, 1973 recital at UCLA's Royce Hall. Pavarotti, just a few weeks shy of his thirty-eighth birthday and very much in his prime, gives a thrilling performance of this aria, capping the cabaletta with a stunning high C!
O mio rimorso! O infamia
e vissi in tale errore?
Ma il turpe sogno a frangere
il ver mi balenò.
Per poco in seno acquétati,
o grido dell'onore;
M'avrai securo vindice;
Oh, my remorse! Oh, disgrace!
And I lived so mistaken!
But the truth, like a flash,
Has broken my base sleep!
For a little while be calm in my breast,
Oh, cry of honour;
In me you shall have a sure avenger;
I shall wash away this infamy.
Oh, shame! Oh, disgrace!
Ah, yes, I shall wash away this infamy!
