Scena nel Castello di Macbeth come nell'Atto Primo. Notte.
Medico e Dama di Lady Macbeth.
MEDICO
Vegliammo invan due notti.
DAMA
In questa apparirà.
MEDICO
Di che parlava nel sonno suo?
DAMA
Ridirlo non debbo a uom che viva... Eccola!
SCENA IV
Lady Macbeth e precedenti.
MEDICO
Un lume recasi in man?
DAMA
La lampada che sempre
si tiene accanto al letto.
MEDICO
Oh, come gli occhi spalanca!
DAMA
E pur non vede.
Lady depone il lume e si frega le mani, facendo l'atto di cancellare qulche cosa.
MEDICO
Perché sfrega le man?
DAMA
Lavarsi crede!

SCENE TWO
A hall in Macbeth's castle.
Night.
A doctor and Lady Macbeth's gentlewoman
DOCTOR
We have waited in
vain for two nights,
GENTLEWOMAN
She will appear tonight.
DOCTOR
What was she talking about in her sleep?
GENTLEWOMAN
I must not repeat it to any living man.
Lady Macbeth enterswith a lamp.
Here she is!
DOCTOR
That lamp in her hand … ?
GENTLEWOMAN
It is the lamp which she
keeps always beside her bed.
DOCTOR
Oh, her eyes are wide open!
GENTLEWOMAN
Yet she cannot see.
Lady Macbeth puts down the lamp and rubs her hands as if washhig something off.
DOCTOR
Why is she rubbing her hands?
GENTLEWOMAN
She thinks that she's washing them.
