Soprano Zinka Milanov (1906-1989) sang Desdemona for the first time on 1 July 1941 in Buenos Aires. Her initial performance of the role at the Metropolitan Opera was on 17 March 1958. When RCA recorded this fourth act scena complete in stereo later that year, it was the artist's final recording for the company. She last performed the role at the Metropolitan on 15 April 1965. Mme Milanov made her final appearances there during April 1966, as Maddalena in Andrea Chénier on the 13th, and on the 16th in the Farewell Gala which closed the old house at Broadway and 39th Street.
