Simon Boccanegra, Doge of Genoa, is informed that his daughter Amelia has just avoided being kidnapped. He beseeches both the plebians and the patricians of the Senate to seek a peaceful solution to their quarrels and Amelia leads the ensemble in a prayer for peace. Boccanegra also discerns that the evil Paolo is responsible for ordering the abduction of Amelia. He orders him to curse the man responsible, which Paolo does, even though he is cursing himself.
